Every year the Leicestershire Yeomanry hold a Centenary Service at Newton Linford parish church, followed by a muster and wreath-laying at the War Memorial in Bradgate Park. The service is always held close to the anniversary of the Battle of Frezenberg Ridge (8-13 May 1915). The Ridge was held – but of the 280 men of the Yeomanry who took part in the battle, 90 died and 90 were injured. The Centenary Service and ceremony were particularly poignant this year – 100 years on – and came at the end of a group visit to Flanders led by the honorary Colonel Robert Boyle, during which a memorial to the battle was dedicated. The battle was also remembered at the evening ceremony at the Menin Gate. The main picture shows a guard of honour at the War Memorial with the band behind, and the Leicestershire countryside in the distance. The other picture shows officers and cadets with the colours as the congregation leave the church.
