One of Leicestershire’s great educational success stories is Fullhurst Community College. Having spent a morning with Acting Principal Steve Piggot and Chair of the Trustees Rick Moore, I was impressed at the impact Fullhurst are having on the children who attend the school and the wider community.
It would be all too easy to ‘pigeon hole’ this school. Being in one of the most deprived areas of the city one may expect that ambitions were low and that achievement was measured ‘in context of location’. You would be totally wrong. This school is outperforming schools across the county and is a real centre of excellence in education. A Fullhurst education is something to be rightly proud of and the school is over-subscribed.
To be a part of Fullhurst Community College is to transform lives. In 2016, their Progress 8 measure was +0.48, the highest in Leicester and provisionally in 2017 it is +0.62. This score is exceptional; demonstrating the strength of their curriculum and that all groups of Fullhurst students achieve beyond national targets. This is a testament to the staff and leadership at the school and the attitude and work of the students.
I cannot begin to list the exceptional and forward-thinking initiatives currently undertaken within the school aimed at transforming lives, creating aspiration, ambition and pride – all of which shine out of the students.
I am very much looking forward to working with Fullhurst in the future and I am confident that they are turning out young people who will be a credit to the school and to the county.
